Know your product. The best content you'll see on YouTube is from someone who knows what they're talking about. If you're new to using a product, make sure you let your users know otherwise it's going to look like you don't know what you're doing. Research reviews and other content so you can see what other problems/issues users have and see if you can address them in your video.
Though a large following doesn’t guarantee a profitable experience, it generally holds true that the larger an audience the greater your revenue potential on Twitter. Unless you’re a well known figure or enjoying your 15 minutes of fame–like these guys–growing the number of followers will take a lot of hard work. Here are some tips to make it easier:

You have to remember that on Twitter, you only have 140 characters to work with. (At least for now–who knows what will happen with this 280 character limit in the works.) Your link takes up 23 characters of your tweet, even when you don’t use a link shortener, so you have 117 to say what you want to about the product and disclose that it’s an affiliate link. So you need to be short, sweet, and to the point.
On a monthly basis, I’ve had success devoting an hour or two to a couple of activities. First, I send out a monthly newsletter to my affiliates (you can typically do this within your affiliate app). Make sure you actually put yourself out there and interact with the people you are following. You don’t have to comment on every post they make (that would be a bit stalkerish), but when you see something they posted is interesting or helpful, let them know! You can even re-tweet it or give them a special mention on your Twitter feed. Just be genuine. If someone isn’t providing helpful and useful information, remove them from your list and follow someone else (remember, people will do the same to you). Only follow those who are truly helpful. If they send you a direct message or respond to a comment, reply back! Forming a relationship like this can literally turn into money later, so get out there and network with the people you are following. Don’t just give them sales pitches for your website, product, or service – that will come later. For the most part, just interact and have fun. As a direct and indirect result of your friendliness, your own following will continue to grow.
This is a fairly general Twitter tip but it applies to affiliate marketing. If you’re going to promote a product on Twitter make sure it’s highly useful to your followers. This is connected to being relevant – but goes beyond it. I find that the more useful my Twittering is the more positive feedback I get from followers. The same is true from blogging and interestingly enough it applies to the products I’ve promoted over the years. The best feedback that I can possibly get after an affiliate product campaign is from someone who bought the product and thanks me for recommending it because they found it useful. To me this is the ultimate feedback because it means I’ve not only made a little money, but more importantly I have a reader who is happy, who remains loyal and who is perhaps even more loyal than they were before I made the recommendation. This really comes down to smart selection of products to recommend – make sure that they are the best!

If you simply sign up to Twitter, buy a lot of followers and then begin spamming affiliate links every day we can tell you now that you won’t make any money. Affiliate marketing is a long-term effort and you need to create quality content first and then promote your affiliate links later. Anyone who does the reverse of this just won’t generate any income.


Nice tips here, Steve. I’ve been a huge fan of YouTube for niches other than IM-related stuff. Apart from a few outliers, my Blogging Bookshelf and The Backlight videos never got too many views. How do your SSS vids fare? My Amazopia videos, though, have 220,000+ views now and are the main source of traffic for the blog. And I know you’ve said in the past that you get lots of YouTube traffic for your main niche.

Multiple Twitter Identities.  We have noticed that affiliates using Twitter often maintain multiple Twitter identities.  Based on data pulled for the second week in November 2011, 75% of the affiliates found on Twitter maintain more than one Twitter alias. They do this for several reasons:  to re-tweet their own posts under different user names in order to drive up a tweet’s popularity; to tweet the same thing over again without appearing redundant; and to follow themselves to ‘seed’ a follower list.
I would not ever tweet specifically to sell a product, I don’t think there’s enough money to be made to justify that kind of annoying behavior. On the other hand I frequently tweet books I’m reading if I find them interesting. If any traffic does end up coming from my post I figure I deserve a piece of the pie for it, but I certainly wouldn’t go around posting things just trying to make money, that goes back to the best advice I’ve found for twitter newbies, “don’t be a dick.”

When using social media for affiliate marketing, you should always stop and focus on your content first. Do your posts have the ability to stand on their own regardless of your affiliate link? Do they provide something of value to your audience? Do they grab attention? Using the right education and finesse, you can learn how to really rope in your social media platform audiences, and demand their attention with high quality and interesting content.
Blend planned campaign posts with engagement. Schedule your branded and content posts at least one week ahead. Use scheduler tools to pre-post and then dictate the publishing time. Typically, the biggest mistake that most companies make is that when they connect, follow, or get followers, the relationship ends there. Just because you have followers or you follow others does not mean that you do not need to put in the work to develop a relationship. The fact is that you must be able to build a community that will maintain a good structure and will ensure the full potential for your business to succeed. Strong connections are often the result of your engagement with the community, so you need to participate and engage with your network. Otherwise, the people you are connected to will see you have no value and they will pay attention to other networks that are beneficial and offer them value.

Every single brand has a different commission rate. So Amazon’s will go up to 10% depending on how many products you sell in a month. But some brands will only do 5%, and some will do 50. Some will do 20. So you’ll have to look in the terms and conditions of that advertiser to see what kind of commission they get and whether you want to work with them or not.
