To stray from the legalese for a moment and put a bow on all this, there are a couple other things that suggest that using affiliate links is acceptable. In a situation where everyone wins, it is hard to see why anyone would want to fiddle with it.
4. Perhaps the most blatant offender is the reply spammer, which is relatively new to the scene. These people reply to popular Twitter users with an affiliate link, and try to trick people into clicking. These reply spammers also try to trick the popular person’s followers, because at first glance, it looks like the Tweet is coming from them. Considering most of these tweets look identical, I simply click the block button and move on. Get blocked often enough and you’ll be suspended. Good luck getting your account back.
Unlike Facebook and some other social media platforms, you can tweet very frequently. Most major companies will send out a new tweet ever hour. This includes social media management companies like HootSuite and other well known internet based companies like GoDaddy and HostGator. If they are doing it, chances are it’s pretty safe for you to do it. Since Twitter is such an “in the moment” social platform, you can even tweet out the same thing two days in a row. Hardly anyone (if anyone) will notice.
First, you should feel free to pin relevant affiliate content to your EXISTING personal boards that are filled with mostly substantive content from other blogs. If you have a product to sell on your website, Twitter can be a great way to get in front of potential customers by engaging in discussions on relevant topics and including links to your products. Many e-commerce companies use Twitter to offer special deals and advance opportunities to nab popular products. Once you start to gain a small following, share things that are irresistible. If you don’t have a blog or website yet, get one. You can create all sorts of interesting content that your following will love. Top 10 lists are huge. If you do nothing else but create top 10 lists related to your industry and share it with your targeted following, you will gain traffic to your blog, your information will get re-tweeted and shared, and you will watch the number of followers you have climb even higher. And remember, you can tweet about an article many times. Twitter is a very “in the now” type of platform and most people will never realize you posted to the same article 5 times in the same week.
The easiest thing to do is to sign up for an affiliate marketing network like Commission Junction. They provide a marketplace where your affiliate program will be advertised to other affiliate marketers. They also provide the tracking software for your affiliates so you don’t have to build your own tracking system. In some ways this is better because it takes care of the trust issues. Affiliates are always suspicious of whether or not they’re getting credited for the sales they generate. By having an intermediary take care of transaction tracking and payments, the fear of being cheated is alleviated. 
Affiliate marketing on the other hand can be done with very little to no investment. The only investment is the domain name and auto-responder service like Aweber. You need to set up a opt-in page to collect email of prospects in return for a free gift and do your marketing in follow up emails that you set up in your auto-responder. If you want you can spend some money advertising your opt-in page or go the free route for promoting it. However, don't expect to make sales right away. It can take a while for sales to trickle in.
From what I’ve read, and from what Tasha has answered in other comments above, it seems like Amazon themselves give contradictory information. In one of Tasha’s previous answers she says, “Hi Tim! I’ve talked to Amazon about this as well, as have many other bloggers I know personally. Each one of us is getting different answers. It’s VERY frustrating. Many have been told as long as their Pinterest account is listed in their profile, it’s fine. For those that haven’t, I’ve pointed out during my calls to Amazon that you can pin Amazon affiliate products directly to Pinterest from the rewardStyle interface, so it’s silly for them to tell anyone that they can’t do it directly from their Amazon Associates account. But of course, with Amazon giving different bloggers different answers, you have to do what you are comfortable with. Or, if in doubt, pin Amazon products via rewardStyle if you are a member 🙂 Hope that helps.”

So where do you start? Firstly, find online communities dedicated to your topic of interest (related to your website or a product you’re trying to promote). Join Facebook groups, Twitter chats and forum boards. Start to engage with people, but don’t go straight into promoting yourself or a product. Be nice, be fun and give genuine advice. When you feel like the conversation calls for it, insert an affiliate link and say why this product would help in this particular situation. That way people will trust you and will be more inclined to buy the product.

Besides affiliate links, publishers can get access to tracking reports (clicks, sales, impressions), additional promotional materials (banners, copy, email templates) inside the retailer’s affiliate platform. These platforms also handle commission payments so publishers can expect to be paid around the same time each month, usually by Paypal or direct deposit.
By creating a favorite things page, you can direct interested parties from all of your social platforms to this page when they ask about anything you love or use. AND you can include that link in your YouTube description knowing that it can continually be updated and improved so present and future viewers of your videos will be able to see the updated version at all times.

Lack of Merchant Diversity.  There seems to be very little merchant diversity within tweets, meaning that the same merchants seem to be promoted over and over again.  The most widely promoted merchants on Twitter are iTunes.Apple.com with 49% of affiliate tweets, Astrology.com with 5% of affiliate tweets, and Groupon with 2% of affiliate tweets. ** There are other programs affiliate programs that you can apply to for Pinterest depending on what you are wanting to promote.  Some of these (like Target) offer products in a variety of categories, but you will just need to look through ShareASale and other programs and read through their TOS and apply.  These are just ones that I use and were fairly easy to join and promote.
What does this mean? In this case, it means demonstrating your authority and/or expertise in the subject area on which your marketing will focus. So if you are looking to sell online poker affiliate programs, link to good-quality news content that you have written yourself, or that you have seen on a trusted source, and give your readers something they did not have, or did not know, before. This is a good, positive, way to establish your brand.
Becoming a part of an affiliate marketing programs network is a great strategy for increasing your bottom line. When done correctly, affiliate marketing is beneficial to everyone involved, generating sales, customer referrals, and new website visitors. The best part of affiliate marketing is that it’s basically risk-free for both sides. The affiliate marketer only pays the referral fee when a lead is generated.
Niche-specific challenges: It’s relatively easy to create content for the “tech how-to” niche (like “how to install Windows” or “how to use WinRar) - you just need a screencasting software and a microphone. For niches like DIY plumbing, however, you need significant time, energy and skills. This often compels marketers to flood the easier niches, increasing competition.
