But where to start? Below are three best practices to leverage social media to increase traffic through your affiliate sites.

If I were to recommend one tips above others it would be this one. I think it would be much more effective and less intrusive with the culture on Twitter to tweet a link to a post you’ve written on your blog that includes an affiliate link – than to tweet the affiliate link directly. Write up a review of the product on your blog, give a balanced review, share why the product is relevant to your readers, tell them who would benefit most from it etc. And THEN tweet a link to the review. The problem with Twitter is that you’ve got 140 or so characters and to really do the product you’re promoting service and to give your readers a well balanced review you need more than that.
I’d stick with Amazon if I were you. All of my Amazon sites only have Amazon affiliate links. If you use Google Adsense display ads on your site, you’re literally taking people away from your site for the sake of just a few cents with these type of ads. If you direct them just to Amazon, then you have a greater chance of earning more money from that click.

LinkConnector is something of a mixed bag, so it’s probably best for experienced affiliates who have become disillusioned with other networks and are looking to expand. LinkConnector’s bizarre mix of high-quality products and a low-quality dashboard make it hard to truly assess its viability, but their exclusive deals with some vendors can make it a true home run for publishers working in certain niches.
Affiliate marketing tends to do exceptionally well on social media when you promote a high-quality offer. In such a situation, everyone wins. The customer wins since they obtain an awesome deal; the affiliate marketer wins since they earn a heavy commission on driving traffic to the website, earning sales and the product manufacturer wins by generating revenue for what they have created.
It is also useful to consider whether your products have varying markups as you come up with your default commission rates. This is because you might want to incentivize your affiliates to generate more sales on products that are already earning you higher profits. If you want to create a set rate instead, you’ll want to find a percentage that takes your varying markup rates into consideration. Instead of creating a single set commission rate, some affiliate marketers opt for a tier system where different commission rates are assigned to different product categories.

The bulk of the offers that I promote pay around $20-$40 per lead, but there are others that pay more and less. However, you don't want to get caught up solely on what an offer pays because how well it converts is just as important. For example, if you have an offer that pays $9, but if it converts at 2X or more of a $20 offer, then it will perform about the same and possibly better. At the same time, if you have an offer that pays $90 and it converts poorly, it may not even be worth promoting.
In 2010 I started my first blog, I Heart Photoshop, to teach Photoshop tutorials and how-to’s to the basic hobby user. A year later, I had jumped ship on that blog and put on my mommy blogger hat. In those early days of blogging, I was like a kid in a candy store when I would receive even $5 from an affiliate link or relationship and I would have NEVER believed that I would ever get to the point where I could generate over $1,000+/month from affiliates.
You only have 280 characters to sell your product. That really isn’t a lot. This is eaten up pretty quickly especially if you post a link on Twitter even if it has been shortened. Why do your followers need the product that you are promoting? What good will it do them? Will it solve their problem? It sounds daunting but in some ways having a very limited amount of text can actually be a good thing. Some affiliate marketers try to put in too much information on Facebook or Instagram and they put potential customers off. With Twitter, you have to sell the product right away and marketing in Twitter can often be more effective.
If you’re running WordPress, I use a plugin called Thirsty Affiliates to cloak, manage, and track my affiliate links (you have to pay Thirsty Affiliates for their add-ons if you want extra features). The free version is still good… just install the plugin and find the “Affiliate Links” tab on the left of your dashboard. Add the link name and destination URL, save it, then copy the cloaked version of the URL so you can add it to your Youtube video annotations.
