Creating accounts on these networks is only the first step. Now begins the hard work of building a quality following on each platform. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut if you want your following to be truly engaged (i.e. valuable). By interacting with consumers and joining the online discussions happening in your industry, you can build up your social media credibility and contribute to the 17 percent of users who feel more connected to brands they see on social networking sites.


The easiest way is to recommend products (mentioned in your video) using affiliate links. When someone purchases a product through your affiliate link, you get a commission from the sale. You’re basically promoting someone else’s product for a commission. I make $1,000/month doing this and it’s my second largest source of income next to SEO consulting.

In this example, a blogger might put this link on their blog to try to get their readers to click through to your “blue widget” page and hopefully buy something. The term affiliate marketing as it applies to Youtube is the creation of video content that contains affiliate links in the video or the description of the video. An affiliate link is a link that leads directly to a product or website, that allows the viewer who clicked it to buy the product or sign up to a subscription ect. For every person that makes a purchase through your affiliate link, you can earn "commission" or a certain percentage of the profit off each sale. It might sound tricky at first, but really the affiliate link are the easiest part, it's getting people to click on them that's hard. Really the only way is to try and drive as much traffic to your videos as possible by creating quality content and promoting yourself right. Creating content that is designed for your affiliate links rather than jamming them down your audience's throats will likely get you a lot more clicks than the other way around.
Another mistake I see many affiliate marketers make on social media is thinking a bit too much about the money. You can’t just put up a bunch of post everyday that are essentially advertisements. It gets old fast and most people view it just as bad as spam. It’s ok to throw in some relevant ads once in a while, but the majority of your posts and updates on social media should not contain affiliate links or links to sales pages on your website. This is especially true for new affiliate marketers who have only recently established a following. Build trust first and monetize later.
So where do you start? Firstly, find online communities dedicated to your topic of interest (related to your website or a product you’re trying to promote). Join Facebook groups, Twitter chats and forum boards. Start to engage with people, but don’t go straight into promoting yourself or a product. Be nice, be fun and give genuine advice. When you feel like the conversation calls for it, insert an affiliate link and say why this product would help in this particular situation. That way people will trust you and will be more inclined to buy the product.
To be successful in affiliate marketing, you need to know your audience – that seems like the most obvious thing to say, but it doesn’t make it less true. The most effective affiliate marketer is aiming to serve people – find products which are actually interesting to them and tell them why they are useful. To do that, you need to know who these people are.

Anyone who does the reverse of this just won’t generate any income.

Set up your queries in such a way that you’ll be able to find relevant conversations. For example, if you’re promoting an app to enhance productivity, set up such queries as “how to improve productivity”, “productivity hacks”, “apps for productivity” and anything else that your brain can come up with. You can do the same for your blog. With a Boolean search mode, you’ll be able to customize your queries to find people who’re looking for recommendations, conducting market research or even complaining about competing products. Once you found these posts, you can offer them a solution with your affiliate link (again, be nice and natural).

Content marketing strategy should be your first priority. Content is the base foundation for any product or service. It behaves like a life-saving drug for any product. There will be no traffic on your page if your content is not interesting or effective. If you compromise with your content and only think about making money online, you will lose viewers on your page.
Not that long ago, consumers would find a product that looked cool, maybe talk to a salesman, and make a purchase if it appeared to fit their needs. Now, consumers are flocking online, well before they decide to make a purchase, to do in-depth research and find the very best product available. Unboxing videos and product reviews have exploded into the buyer’s journey, and there is a huge opportunity to capitalize on this research phase through your YouTube channel. Consumers are simply looking for reviews that they can trust to help them make the best choice possible on the products they need. It’s incredibly important to find something that you are truly passionate about and provide people with a detailed review of why this is the best product available. Doing this will build trust and foster a community that organically grows in followers.
If you’re running WordPress, I use a plugin called Thirsty Affiliates to cloak, manage, and track my affiliate links (you have to pay Thirsty Affiliates for their add-ons if you want extra features). The free version is still good… just install the plugin and find the “Affiliate Links” tab on the left of your dashboard. Add the link name and destination URL, save it, then copy the cloaked version of the URL so you can add it to your Youtube video annotations.
