Another mistake I see many affiliate marketers make on social media is thinking a bit too much about the money. You can’t just put up a bunch of post everyday that are essentially advertisements. It gets old fast and most people view it just as bad as spam. It’s ok to throw in some relevant ads once in a while, but the majority of your posts and updates on social media should not contain affiliate links or links to sales pages on your website. This is especially true for new affiliate marketers who have only recently established a following. Build trust first and monetize later.
You will first need to learn which products/merchants are best to refer your audience too. Most websites have an “Affiliates” tab at the top or bottom of their website where you can sign up. You can also Google “_____ affiliate program” to see it it shows up here. There are many affiliate hubs which have thousands of products/merchants. Try out Amazon, ShareASale, or CJ. Once signed up and approved, you can start creating your affiliate links:
Then I made my very first affiliate sale for my favorite travel blogging course. It was a recurring payment of $38.80 (someone purchased the course on a payment plan.) I was over the moon! I had been promoting that course for 2 months before I finally made a sale. This small win encouraged me to continue trying different strategies to promote affiliate products.
Instagram tends to be a kinder, gentler social network than Facebook or Twitter, too. This means that, although trolling does exist, it's more likely you will find a specific audience that you want on Instagram. This is partly because it's a visual medium, so a good image can draw in impressed crowds to learn more, and partly because users are accustomed to using hashtags, which are acknowledged and accepted as a way of targeting users with particular interests.
For example, I have a post featuring 10 Affordable Headboards on my blog. Now, instead of just pinning the “pinnable graphic” you see below, I pin that PLUS individual images of each headboard featured within the post. That exponentially increases the chance that people will click on the pin and through to my blog post, which in turn increases my chance of making affiliate sales from that post. Plus, it also boosts traffic to that post, which translates to more ad revenue as well–it’s a win-win!
Your Facebook page is your “face” (pun not intended, I promise). Of all your accounts, people will probably look up your Facebook the most. So what you share here is extremely important. It’s better to be quite mean with promotional content (of course, this doesn’t apply if you have a coupon website). The common ratio is 80/20 – that means that out of eight posts, two can be promotional. Compared with your other social media, you should be sharing the least amount of affiliate links there.
Recent corporate changes and folding 2Checkout into a larger company that is involved in payment processing and e-commerce means that the affiliate program can sometimes feel somewhat neglected. But the ability to generate custom coupon codes and the comprehensive knowledge base make 2Checkout a good option for experienced affiliates with an established user base. But if you’re just entering the affiliate field for the first time, 2Checkout might not be where you want to start.

Another option is to build your own tracking system and ecommerce affiliate program, which, in actuality, isn’t as complicated as it sounds. There are a range of free apps for affiliate marketing on Shopify. In addition to paid apps on Shopify, which you use to set the foundation for your affiliate program, there are also plenty of with other helpful plugins. Even paid apps come with a lengthy free trial period so you can test out your affiliate program, make sure that you get a good return on investment, and then decide which apps are worth your money.

In recent years, Instagram became The Place for affiliate marketing. You may believe that Instagram is only meant for visual products like clothes and make-up, but you’ll be surprised to learn that the biggest Instagram influencer is @dailydose – an account that mostly posts inspirational and motivational quotes. Not the most visually rich content, huh? So even if you have a website dedicated to startups, you can post anything as long as it’s somehow related to business and technology. The general advice would be to post twice a day, and post Instagram Stories 8-10 times a day.
Not that long ago, consumers would find a product that looked cool, maybe talk to a salesman, and make a purchase if it appeared to fit their needs. Now, consumers are flocking online, well before they decide to make a purchase, to do in-depth research and find the very best product available. Unboxing videos and product reviews have exploded into the buyer’s journey, and there is a huge opportunity to capitalize on this research phase through your YouTube channel. Consumers are simply looking for reviews that they can trust to help them make the best choice possible on the products they need. It’s incredibly important to find something that you are truly passionate about and provide people with a detailed review of why this is the best product available. Doing this will build trust and foster a community that organically grows in followers.
Everyone likes a compliment. In fact, people like compliments so much they usually share it with their friends and followers! Use this to your advantage. It’s important for you to know who the big players are in your niche. For example, my website is about affiliate marketing. There are literally 10’s of thousands of affiliate marketers that are earning a full-time living. I could create a blog post about “The 10 Most Successful Affiliate Marketers In 2014” or “Affiliate Marketers Who Inspired Me” or any other list I decide to create. Once I’ve written an article and put it on my site, I can share it all over my social media accounts. But here’s the kicker – I would also send a message to all the affiliate marketers on my list with a link to the article. Just about every one of them will share it with their followers. Doing this on a regular basis can literally send thousands (even tens or hundreds of thousands) of visitors to your website every month while simultaneously helping to build your own following.
StudioPress is a WordPress hosting service and framework that is designed to make setting up and running a WordPress site much simpler and easier. StudioPress comes with its own unique themes and SEO tools, collectively known as the “Genesis framework.”. Their affiliate program is solely for referrals to pay for a StudioPress framework account or buying a StudioPress theme. Previously, the affiliate program also included web hosting, but this is now managed separately by StudioPress’s owner, WPEngine.

Typically, the biggest mistake that most companies make is that when they connect, follow, or get followers, the relationship ends there. Just because you have followers or you follow others does not mean that you do not need to put in the work to develop a relationship. The fact is that you must be able to build a community that will maintain a good structure and will ensure the full potential for your business to succeed. Strong connections are often the result of your engagement with the community, so you need to participate and engage with your network. Otherwise, the people you are connected to will see you have no value and they will pay attention to other networks that are beneficial and offer them value.
